TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Basic Knowledge of Aluminum

What is Aluminum Material

Aluminum is a chemical element classified as a lightweight, non-ferrous metal. It belongs to the boron group of post-transition metals and typically forms compounds in the +3 oxidation state. The aluminum cation (Al3+) is small, highly charged, and has strong polarizing power, leading to more covalent character in its bonds. Aluminum is the third-most abundant element in Earth’s crust.

It constitutes about 8% of the crust’s weight. Extracted from bauxite ore through industrial mining, it was discovered in 1825 and became widely used after the Hall–Héroult process in 1886. Aluminum is often alloyed with other metals to enhance its properties. Common alloys include aluminum-copper, aluminum-zinc, and aluminum-magnesium.
