TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW
Basic Knowledge of Copper
What is Tool Steel?
Tool steel is a type of steel used for making tools like cutting tools, dies, hand tools, and knives. These steels are chosen for their hardness, resistance to wear, and ability to maintain a sharp edge at high temperatures. Tool steels, with a carbon content between 0.5% and 1.5%, are carefully manufactured with alloying elements such as tungsten, chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum to form carbides. The rate of carbide dissolution in iron’s austenite phase affects the steel’s high-temperature performance.
Proper heat treatment is important to enhance properties like hardness and toughness. There are six groups of tool steels: cold-work, high-speed, hot-work, shock-resistant, water-hardening, and special purpose. They are chosen based on cost, working temperature, hardness, strength, shock resistance, and toughness. Tool steels are very important for cutting, pressing, extruding, and coining metals.
