TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Basic Knowledge of Aluminum

What is Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant alloy primarily composed of iron, chromium, and other elements. The inclusion of at least 10.5% chromium forms a protective layer on the surface, preventing rust and corrosion. Various grades exist, with different alloying elements like nickel and molybdenum, tailoring the steel for specific applications. There are several types of stainless steel– austenitic, ferritic, martensic, and duplex.

Austenitic stainless steel, exemplified by grades 304 and 316, is non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant, and easily formable. Ferritic stainless steel has good corrosion resistance but is less ductile. Martensitic stainless steel is hard and is often applied in cutlery. Duplex stainless steel combines features from both austenitic and ferritic types with high strength and corrosion resistance.
