TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW
Basic Knowledge of Copper
What is Copper?
Copper is a reddish-brown metal with excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and ductility. It has been used since ancient times and is extracted from ores through mining and various purification processes. The Latin word for copper is “cuprum,” and its symbol on the periodic table is Cu. Copper is made of a single type of atom with an atomic number of 29.
Brass and bronze, common copper alloys, are used in plumbing, decoration, bearings, and ship parts. Pure coppers, with minimal impurities, are soft and used for precision electrical components. Copper nanoparticles are tiny particles with unique traits that show high catalytic activity and antimicrobial effects. With added elements, free-machining coppers make machining easier for items like welding nozzles. Copper sheets and plates in different grades are highly malleable for forming different components. Oxygen-free coppers with minimal impurities suit high-vacuum electronics. Lastly, refined for purity electrolytic coppers find use in various electrical components.
